Horace Horrible Headcanons
The greatest sidekick of all sidekicks! I sadly don't have many headcanons about him, but he still deserves his time in the spotlight.
TW: Eye Injuries, Mention of Smoking, Manipulation
🏴‍☠️ He often flaunts his monocle and mustache, seeing them as his best features. However, there are other things he flaunts, on much rarer occasions, like his hair and how sharp his hook is. Whenever people mention his hair, they tend to be surprised he has any, because he always wears an orange bandana that covers it entirely. However, he does actually have a full head of hair. He just wears a bandana to hide his grey hair.
🏴‍☠️ He's, apparently, in his early thirties. A lot of people mistake him for being older, though, due to his voice being a bit raspy and him having a lot of grey hair of his head. He explains the voice to be due to smoking, and his hair to be from stress. Percy has used Horace's "horrible voice" to explain to Janice why she shouldn't smoke.
🏴‍☠️ Horace wants positive attention. It's why he's decided to work for the Skintaker, despite his poor treatment of him. The Skintaker is one of the few characters to treat Horace kindly, even if it is just to manipulate him. The only other character was Janice during two episodes. One where she helped him find his monocle, and another where she confronted the Skintaker about his treatment of him. However, even when confronting him, she majorly downplayed the severity of his actions by saying he was "bullying" Horace. Outside of these two characters, everybody else shows unease and anger towards Horace, many citing the fact that Horace has treated them terribly in the past. Percy downright shows fear, which is reasonable in his case, because Horace often torments him throughout the show.
🏴‍☠️ People in the fandom often misremember his name as Horace the Horrible, instead of Horace Horrible. Even in the show, some people call him Horace the Horrible, only for him to angrily correct them.
🏴‍☠️ He works as a foil to the Skintaker's calm, polite, and eerily quiet demeanor. Horace is loud, rambunctious, screechy, and irritable. If you've made him upset, you will know very quickly what you did, why it upset him, and that Horace will hold it against you for about a week before forgetting it. The Skintaker, however... You'll never know if he's upset you until it's too late, and he'll hold it against you until the grave.
🏴‍☠️ He only has one eye, since the other was taken out by the Skintaker. His last remaining eye is pretty poor, as well, and according to him eye problems run in his mother's side of the family. Nobody knows how he lost his hand, but he doesn't seem to miss it, since he flaunts his hook at times.
🏴‍☠️ He has a catchphrase, but nobody can remember it entirely. Most remember it involving elongating words of praise about himself, most likely about being a sidekick to the Skintaker. So, the fandom has agreed to use the phrase "I'm Horace the Greeeaaatttt!!!! The greeeaaatest sidekick to have ever sidekicked!!!!" as a replacement when talking about him.
🏴‍☠️ The fandom likes to point at him and affectionately call him a gremlin. You'd expect it to be Percy, or maybe even the Skintaker. But, no, it's Horace. The creators of the show tried so hard to make him unlikeable, but gave him enough sympathetic trails that the fandom has looped from hating him as children but loving him as adults. If you ever find any forums made by the Candle Cove fandom, you can often find drawings of him inserted into cat memes, calling him a scrimblo gremlin, and putting him into teacups... Nobody knows where the joke of putting him into teacups comes from, but some think it has to do with the fact the Skintaker only drinks from teacups. You can usually find these images next to shitposts about Pirate Percy being put into a mental institution, since a lot of people find the fact the fandom has latched onto Horace and not Percy to be hilarious, and the shitposts often contrast each other to a hilarious degree.

Random-ass Laughingstock crew headcanons because why tf not
Will I do this for the other main crews? Who knows. Not me.
hc's under the cut because this thing is LONG
Percy
Around 12 years old. Before Janice showed up, he was the baby of the crew. That is to say, he was less 'hired' and more 'adopted'.
Has a simultaneous crippling fear of and intense fascination with fire. Like on the one hand if a fire were to get out of control, he'd immediately start panicking, but if it is controlled (a campfire, contained inside a lantern, etc) he'll just stare into it until someone actively gets his attention. He's been caught multiple times trying to touch burning candles or dropping various substances into campfires to see the colors change.
Borderline-obsessed with ghost stories, fairy tales, and silly, badly-written adventure novels. He'll do whatever he can to get his hands on a new book and sometimes tries writing his own short stories.
On that note, despite his anxiety, he LOVES things that are typically considered 'creepy'. He'll sit and listen when one of the others is telling a scary story, almost entranced. Also, he thinks spiders are cute.
His coat was stolen from an Imperial Navy soldier, specifically one working for the NPHC branch. He wears it like a badge of honor, even if it is a bit too big for him.
Mimics some of Poppy's mannerisms (getting people's attention/figuring out where they are by calling their name at the top of his lungs, picking Janice up and spinning her around when he's happy/excited, things like that).
Owns a small box full of wanted posters for more famous pirates that he admires. He has a bit of a celebrity crush on Milo for a while.
Janice
Older than she's stated to be on the Wiki. Like 10-11 when she gets Isekai'd.
Kind of a weird kid. She's REALLY into horror, urban legends, and 'creepy' things (much like Percy), and enjoys poking around in abandoned buildings-usually with a camera in hand. Tends to drag Melrose into her antics.
Turns into a battle junkie the longer she stays in Candle Cove. Like, she has to be physically held back from charging into a fight unarmed. She's eventually given a sword.
Ends up working with Nathan and Edward (OC, master-at-arms) a lot. Nathan may or may not have contributed to her battle junkie gremlin tendencies.
Diehard Rolling Stones fan. She decided to teach Percy a few of their songs at one point and quickly regretted it upon having to hear an awful sea-shanty rendition of 'Paint it Black'.
Didn't spend much time with her dad prior to getting Isekai'd, since he threw himself into his job to avoid thinking about the whole dead wife thing.
Poppy
Used to be in a relationship with Horace. It was a mess and he wants to forget it happened. Dr. Heartfelt is his rebound and their relationship is significantly less toxic.
Always wanted to have children, but was more enamored of the idea of being a father. Man's in WAY over his head.
Makes insane bets when gambling. He once bet a member of his own crew in a game of Lanterloo.
VERY physical in how he shows affection. He'll pick people up and twirl them around (something Percy started doing as well), his idea of a friendly greeting is a hard clap on the shoulder, any romantic partner of his will very quickly get used to having their entire face peppered with kisses, things like that. He has very nearly cracked people's ribs by hugging them too hard.
Has a very bad habit of assuming that if he has good intentions (like trying to protect his loved ones), then that justifies anything he does in the name of said good intentions, no matter how horrific. It's how he was able to justify flaying Thade/Skin-Taker alive-he convinced himself that since his actions were spurred on by Thade being dangerous, then that meant what he was doing was good. And besides, the punishment fits the crime in this case, doesn't it?
Doesn't understand Percy's love of adventure novels in the least. He can't for the life of him figure out why (in his mind) such a smart, mature boy would be so invested in what he sees as nothing more than bedtime stories for much smaller children. Percy's given up on trying to explain it to him.
Dr. Heartfelt
Given name is Alois. That said, most people don't actually call him by his real given name-most of the crew just calls him 'Dr. Heartfelt', Sea-Dog gave him the nickname 'Herr Doktor' (which Milo later started using), and Poppy calls him 'Al' or 'Allie'. Percy will sometimes call him by his real name, but more often defaults to 'Dr. Heartfelt' or, in moments of extreme stress, 'Vati' (an older German equivalent to 'Dad' or 'Daddy')
Used to work as a medic for his home country's military. He does NOT like talking about it.
His soft, sunshiny demeanor is about 50-60% his genuine personality and 40-50% a coping mechanism/stress response. He doesn't usually display 'negative' emotions around others, preferring to wait until he can cry or vent his anger/anxiety/etc. in private.
Gives extremely good hugs. Being a ragdoll (which means he's incredibly soft) very much contributes to that.
Around Poppy's age-so mid-late 30's-but looks more like he's pushing 50.
Taught Percy German (or rather, the in-setting equivalent thereof). He will sometimes call him 'kindchen' (dear child/sweetheart) when comforting him.
I know the wiki says that when he does fight he uses like. Needles. But I thought it'd be fun if he primarily uses a rapier in combat. It's basically a bigass needle with a hilt. Close enough. Where'd he get it? Uhhhhhhhhhhhhhh I don't know so he doesn't remember.
Sea-Dog
Has a nickname for basically every single one of his crewmates, including Poppy. Of note are 'Sugar Cookie' (Janice), 'Guppy' (Percy), 'Ms. L' (Laughingstock), 'Bossman' (Poppy), Herr Doktor (Dr. Heartfelt), and 'Casanova' (Milo). The others tend to start using these nicknames for each other after a while.
100% sounds like Keith David.
MASSIVE alcoholic, often seen carrying or drinking from a hip flask.
Can be distracted by things that ordinary, non-sapient dogs would be, such as throwing a stick. Or salt pork. This is used against him by Horace and co. on at least a few occasions.
Along with not believing in sea stories, he's also agnostic, being of the opinion that there probably aren't any gods out there, but if there are they have a sick sense of humor.
Tends to rest his head on other people's legs when tired or stressed.
Smol. As in, he only stands at 3 feet tall. He also weighs like 5 pounds and HAS gotten flung around due to high wind/choppy waters. Poor guy has straight-up had to tie himself to the rigging in order to keep working during storms for fear of ending up overboard.
Banana King
Comes up with some creative, often incredibly wordy insults/profane statements, Karkat Vantas-style. I can imagine him saying something to the effect of 'what in the wet bag of horse shit to the face am I looking at here'. Yes I stole that from 'Karkat Sings Opera', fight me.
Doesn't just hate bananas as a food item. He genuinely can't be anywhere near them after his death, and even the smell of banana is enough to make him lose it. One of the others once saw him huddled in the hold muttering about banana peels and teeth.
Owns a female African Grey parrot named Guava. Guava is somehow more crass than her owner. Guava is also represented by a little hand puppet and sounds like Gilbert Gottfried.
Gets along well with Milo. Like, scarily well. They pretty much share a brain cell.
Can be invisible like any other ghost, but you can still tell he's there by the smell of cigar smoke and-you guessed it!-banana flowers.
Calvery
Some flavor of Eastern European (again, in-universe equivalent). I can't put my finger on why, but his name just sounds really aggressively Slavic.
Pretty much EXCLUSIVELY targets Horace during skirmishes/run-ins. He would wring that man's neck given half a chance.
Actually has a soft spot for children (directly contradicting the Wiki ik ik), but is veeeeeerrry twitchy about Janice working with Nathan and Edward specifically. He'll occasionally make comments about how one of these days the poor girl's going to get herself killed.
Drinking buddies with Sea-Dog.
Milo
He's had many faces and gone by many names over the years (a reference to the SEBTAW weirdness with his hair color and his abundance of conflicting fanon designs). This effect is usually achieved with the power of facial accessories, makeup, and Ye Olde Hair Dye (that is to say, henna and squid ink). His most recent persona before he joined the Laughingstock crew was the first time he'd used his real name since childhood.
Once got ahold of a hurdy-gurdy and actually learned how to play it.
Actually, I hc him as musically talented in general, and having a singing voice that sounds a lot like Aurelio Voltaire, aka this guy:
youtube
Basically he kinda has DnD bard vibes.
Treats Danny (his dragon) about the way you'd treat a cat. He coaxes the little guy out of enclosed spaces with treats and goes 'pspspspspspspsps' to get his attention and baby-talks at him, all that fun stuff. He used to play with him with a homemade feather-on-a-string toy until Danny got too excited and set it on fire.
He's lost track of how many times he's been arrested/imprisoned. Putting him in Tartar Prison was a desperate last resort. You may ask, 'why not just have him executed?' but he has to be kept SOMEWHERE before his death. He once managed an escape minutes before being hanged, which he counts as his greatest achievement that he doesn't think he'll ever be able to pull off a second time.
Massive liar. He will just make shit up to make himself look more impressive if he thinks it'll get people to pay attention to him.
Plays five finger fillet when he's bored, and is sometimes seen with bandaged fingers as a result.
Occasionally seen smoking what look like cigarillos.
Nathan
Significantly older than his Wiki counterpart, at around 16-17 years old. Obviously doesn't have the feelings for Janice that his canon self has, but does enjoy her company (he likes that someone looks up to him, it makes him feel special).
Idolizes Schott Weiss (Percy's father). Percy doesn't exactly know how to feel about that.
Grew up on the Firelight Islands (Burnt Wicks equivalent of the Candle Islands) as the son of a dockworker. He's never properly explained how he ended up working for a pirate crew, but has alluded to the fact that it involved a hostage situation and a changing of hands by way of being auctioned off in Goldshore (a location in the Burnt Wicks version of the Cutlass Islands). He jokes that he was taken in because Poppy and Anne (the previous captain) took pity on him.
Bites as a fight-or-flight response in combat.
Mixed-race, with one parent being effectively white British and the other one being the equivalent of Southeast Asian
Salty Jojo
Real name is Joseph Blaine. Not that anyone knows that. He was 'Salty Jojo' for 30 years before meeting the Laughingstock crew and he will be remembered as 'Salty Jojo' when he dies.
Often pulls the 'when I was your age' card, including on the adults (which he can feasibly do because he's old as hell). He did it to Poppy once, leading to the first time any of them had seen the man at a loss for words.
He's just...so used to weird shit happening at this point. His reaction to seeing the Skin-Taker for the first time is mild surprise, and during an encounter with Gorger/ManBearPig, he responds to it roaring in his face with a casual 'Sorry, what was that? I don't speak feral."
Idk I haven't got much on this guy, sadly.
Ms. Laughingstock
I do not CARE that the Wiki retconned her to be male, that boat is a woman. This is the only character I'm willing to misgender.
Possessed by the spirit of the former captain, Anne Davies.
Has a voice that sounds like Angela Lansbury around the 1980's-90's. My specific point of reference is Mrs. Lovett from Sweeney Todd
Just as stubborn as Poppy, leading to the two often arguing over what course of action to take.
Doesn't speak through a face on the prow, but rather a figurehead. Yes this directly contradicts both the Wiki AND the original creepypasta, but I didn't know how to make it work from a structural standpoint.
Had a habit of hiring people on who are at their lowest-the running joke among the crew is that she pitied them. It's not clear if that's really the case, but it is a pattern she's displayed. This trait carried over to Poppy, leading to the crew including a traumatized "orphan", a preteen Isekai protagonist, a child hostage, a literal ghost, a military deserter, and Milo.
Jesus Christ that's a lotta words.

Here’s a little doodle page I did of my Janice design! I really love her!!
At first her design was gonna be closer to the original (top drawings) but then she looked older than what I wanted so I decided to look up actual 1970s fits and I found on that screamed Janice! I like to think that the star design was painted on there. And her head band is actually just a simple ribbon.
Also I like to think in my AU that she has powers. It’s not really known why or how until later. And with that I like to think that if your powers are strong enough you can summon a spirit and with Janice she has a little water fox.
I’ll do a better design for the fox later.
Let me know who to draw next! I’m still taking ask:)

Pirate Percy Headcanons
These have been brewing in my brain for like 12 years fellas I gotta let them free now. Plus, there's a bonus Skintaker headcanon here.
TW: Paranoia, mentions of hallucinations/mental illness, Alcohol Mention, (for the bonus Skintaker headcanon) Murder/Skinning
🕯️ At the beginning of every episode, Percy would steer his ship, singing a sea shanty vaguely related to whatever the topic of the episode would be.
🕯️ Percy prefers to have nobody in his crew. He considers himself a "lone pirate", in a way. However, when Janice showed up in Candle Cove, completely clueless of the dangers the place held, he just didn't have the heart to say no to helping her out. He planned to just take her to the nearest village and drop her off, but she showed enough potential as a pirate that he let her stay.
🕯️ He used to have a cat named Purrcy. It was a black cat with green eyes, as well as a blue collar. According to a joke the show made, Purrcy was a female cat, but Percy didn't know she was a female when he named her Purrcy. Once he found out, she had already begun responding to the name, so he just continued calling her that. She went missing a few years back. Some especially perceptive viewers, with a good memory of the show, theorize that Purrcy ended up in the Skintaker's care. They claim that during certain scenes of the Skintaker's lair, they see a cat of the same description in the background, one of the only living things in his lair.
🕯️ There have been numerous arguments on online forums about Percy and the Laughingstock. Since numerous characters are confused whenever Percy talks to the ship, and nobody else can seemingly hear it, some theorize that Percy is hallucinating, and that he might have some sort of untreated mental condition due to the time period the show might've taken place in being unable to treat or understand it. Others think that, with the Skintaker being a living skeleton with no explanation of his existence, it is simply cartoon magic that also goes unexplained. Some think it may be both, others don't care, but everybody agrees that it is odd that the creators would include a talking ship only to have one character be able to talk to it.
🕯️ Pirate Percy loves merfolk, and very specifically refers to them as "merfolk", and not "mermaids" or "sirens". Some think it might've been because the puppets for the merfolk were just marionettes with wigs and wooden fish tails, so they didn't look much like men or women, possibly causing the creators to decide to call them merfolk to let the audience use their imagination and create their own versions of them. He has cartoonish overreactions whenever they are around, and one running joke would be that he doesn't get affected by their songs the same way as other sailors. Instead of steering his ship into the rocks and sinking his boat, as the merfolk would intend him to do, he'll run and jump off the side of the Laughingstock and swim to them.
🕯️ Percy LOVES root beer, which seems to be a very obvious stand-in for alcohol. Whenever the characters drink too much of it, they begin to act like your stereotypical cartoon drunks. However, Percy would act a bit differently. Alongside the stereotypical dizziness and lightheadedness, his paranoia tended to grow when he consumed a lot of root beer, and he'd talk to the Laughingstock much more often than other times. He'd also become much more disorganized, often losing track of things right in front of him. That, and he'd become much more accusatory towards people around him, thinking they were out to get him. One moment some remember is when Horace walked up to him, disguised as a nobleman. Percy didn't recognize him, but instantly was weary, and thought that this odd nobleman was going to kill him. This prompted Horace to give up and return to the Skintaker, telling him that Percy has problems if he's going to accuse random people he meets of such things after a few root beers.
🕯️ The first time Percy ever became angry on the show was an episode where Janice decided to put up an advertisement to join Percy's crew in a nearby town. She interpreted his "lone pirate" status as him simply being too shy to ask others to join him, and with good intentions, put up posters to get people interested in joining. This made Percy more than a little upset, as he started getting people asking to join him when he walked around town. It was the one and only time Percy yelled at her out of anger, rather than anxiety, fear, or frustration. Once he calmed down, he explained how he likes being alone due to bad experiences with his past crew, and why he allowed her to join him. Nobody remembers whether or not he ever apologized for his outburst, though.
🕯️ Percy has a specific cave he goes to to try to calm down. He never enters it, but he sits outside to try to relax and ground himself, whenever he can. This is the same cave people remember Percy bringing Janice to, during the final episode.
🕯️ Some people claim to believe that Percy and the Skintaker have some correlation to one another. The evidence they use is that, in multiple scenes, Percy is shown to grind his teeth and either pick or scratch at his skin when he's anxious or afraid, which could be seen as being related to the Skintaker skinning people and grinding it with his teeth. Some also claim a similar thing goes on with Janice and Horace the Horrible, one of their similarities being that they see Percy as having problems he doesn't acknowledge. Janice assumes Percy is very lonely, while Horace has seen how bad Percy's paranoia can get, as well as his root beer consumption. It could be possible that the creators were trying to have some parallels between the protagonists and villains of the show, but with how everything we know about it is due to memories of people who watched it during the 70s, and nobody knows who made it, it could be wrong.
☠️ The Skintaker, during the same episode he explained why his jaw moves side to side to Janice, also told her that he wears skins because he is jealous of humans. According to him, he dreams of having flesh, organs and skin, but settles on just wearing skins, because trying to wear someone's flesh and organs would be too messy. When she asked if he ever used to have those things, he said no. He is just jealous that others do, and feels incomplete, because all the other "skeletons" have them. Some think it implies that he views humans as skeletons, just with the fleshy parts he lacks, and is why he feels relatively unbothered by killing them for their skin. While he is clearly aware that he is killing the human by skinning them, he may still see it as on the same level of evil as stealing someone's nice coat or suit, and not as maiming them.

Just a bunch of Heartfelt and Mort thoughts
I always imagined that Heartfelt was around 18 when he first began training with Mort, but I found out recently that back in pirate times, people graduated high school and started college when they were TWELVE, and... I just don't know what to say. Couldn't've been me. Anyway, I'm gonna take a slight creative liberty and say Heartfelt started his doctor training when he was around 15.
Heartfelt wasn't especially good at biology or science or anything, and he actually had a fear of blood when he started his training, but he was motivated to become a doctor because of his caring personality, and he felt very passionately that people shouldn't get sick or suffer.
Mort used to be one of the head surgeons at Candle Cove's hospital, plus he used to work in academia. He actually wrote a lot of the medical textbooks Heartfelt studied with. I also played with the idea of him being an actual university professor, and him teaching classes at Candle Cove's med school, and that being how he and Heartfelt met, but I'm not sure. Anyways, somehow, Heartfelt ended up becoming his apprentice. I don't think Mort would ordinarily be too jazzed about this, but he saw that Heartfelt was determined to learn, so he accepted.
(OH. Spontaneous idea. Mort was around 60 here. Maybe the hospital board was talking about how they want him to retire. And they wanted somebody to replace him? And they wanted Mort to train a replacement? ORRRRR maybe Mort did something unethical and was fired from the hospital, or put on probation, and he decided to take on a student because he was bored with having so little responsibilities. And maybe also he wanted a successor because he knew the hospital probably wasn't going to take him back, but he wanted his medical expertise to still be present there, through Heartfelt. Or maybe Mort just thought it would be fun. Idk.)
At first, Heartfelt really idolized Mort. Bear in mind that Mort wrote a good deal of the medical textbooks in Candle Cove, so Heartfelt knew who he was beforehand, and knew how smart he was. And he watched how easily Mort could deal with complicated problems and heal people and he was just enchanted. Mort seemed almost unhuman to him. It kind of made him in denial of his negative qualities.
But the fantasy dissipated eventually, and Heartfelt began to acknowledge that he and Mort had really different medical philosophies. And also personalities and values in general.
Heartfelt is very empathetic and personable and makes it a point to get to know each patient and care about them as individuals, even if it exhausts him emotionally.
Mort, meanwhile, has become so desensitized from years and years of dealing with sick and dying people that he barely feels anything for them anymore. His belief is that it’s a waste of energy to get emotionally worked up over every patient and that it makes you less efficient and less able to help people. His bedside manner is nonexistent because of this.
So yeah, the two of them got along alright enough, but they did butt heads. Well, I wouldn't say butt heads. Mort would say or do something, and Heartfelt would feel that it was deeply, deeply wrong, but he'd just keep quiet (usually) because he was just a kid and Mort was his teacher slash boss, so he couldn't exactly backtalk him, and even if he did, it's not like Mort would have listened. But Heartfelt did have his moments of just snapping at him. And then feeling really bad afterwards, ofc, this is Heartfelt we're talking about.
What made their relationship even weirder is that, unfortunately, Heartfelt imprinted onto Mort like a baby duck. Heartfelt didn't really have any family, and while he had friends, he was kind of like the "dad friend" of his friend group, so while he helped other people with their problems, he didn't feel like he could be vulnerable with them. Mort, being the only thing resembling a parental figure in his life, became his outlet and his source of comfort. Mort isn't all that comforting, but Heartfelt took what he could get.
I think I'll stop here, but there IS more to this whole thing. This is just the basics.
Also, have some art while I'm here:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(I'm thinking of making them human because no one else in my interp are puppets/dolls and I think they would stand out too much as minor characters if they had bright pink/purple skin and button eyes.)
